J"Betty Sue's Homecoming" will not disappoint you if you enjoy reading a book chockful of unexpected twists and turns. Just when you think you know what's about to happen..get ready for a steamy surprise adventure! Mr. Caldwell's description of key events in NYC are masterfully woven thru his intriguing storyline along with downhome locations in nearby states. As a reader who has lived and worked in NYC for a long time, I can tell you, the author really captures the essence of Manhattan with his colorful likeable characters including a determined local reporter and a gritty police officer. Of course, best of all is "Betty Sue" whose personal journey had me wanting to read more! It's a fun read with a rewarding ending!
This is the author's summary:
Betty Sue Hannaford is miraculously reunited with the father she was abducted from at the age of three. It is now 27 years later, and Bob Hannaford has kept his porch light on every night in the expectation that some day his daughter would come back to him. Betty Sue brings with her a lifestyle that she knows would embarrass her father and probably alienate her newly rediscovered family. But she is reluctant to give it up because she enjoys it so much.
Wise and kind Uncle Warren uses his professional skills to try to straighten Betty Sue out. Will she adapt to small town Connecticut family life and stay on the straight and narrow? Or will she succumb to one of the many temptations to which she is exposed?
Full measures of romance, suspense, and humor add to the book. Betty Sue joins a church choir. She becomes a regular member of Grandma’s Scrabble circle. Cousin Eleanor leads Betty Sue into community musical theater and into double dating with the prankster Wilkinson twins. They try to outwit would-be kidnapers.
There are also sub-plots involving New Yorker Colby Patterson, who brings Betty Sue back to her father, and an NYPD lady detective/gourmet cook named Fitzie; Bob Hannaford’s avoidance of any entanglements with women out of loyalty to Betty Sue’s dead mother; and community mourning for a family member killed in Afghanistan.
AN EXCERPT
One thing from the man in the restaurant began to turn over and over in Betty's mind. He'd called her “the little girl on the swing.” As long as she could remember, she'd had dreams about soaring up and down on a swing. Sometimes somebody was pushing her. Sometimes she was pumping herself. And looking out over a landscape. Was it a dream? Or was it a real memory?
And that name — Betty Sue. The more she thought about it, the more she seemed to remember a man and a lady, her real father and mother — calling her Betty Sue.
And Connecticut — was she sure she'd never been there? She'd grown up in Pennsylvania. But she remembered the long ride in Auntie's car to get there. Auntie had been her nursemaid, her nanny. She'd brought her up a her own little girl. Had told her that her parents had died in a car crash. But even though she'd asked many times, had never told her what her real name had been or where she had lived as a little girl. And now Auntie was dead and couldn't tell anybody anything.
The man's story seemed far-fetched. But she'd have to try to find him, pump him for details — just in case.
